You can look up court calendars online for upcoming criminal cases. However, if you’re planning on going to the court’s physical location, you can request the case file and see more information that even a background check would provide. If the person was recently arrested, you can look up inmates that are currently in the county law enforcement’s custody. These list of persons in jail also include individuals released and you can see the charges.

Judgments and liens originate from a lawsuit but courts are not always the proper place to obtain them. They are recorded at the county clerks offices. Various states have different names for the agency, some are deed office, recorder's or registrar's office. Judgments are generally filed in the same place or agency as are real property records. Judgments pose a lien on any real estate property owned by the person or company named in the filing. Once the judgment is recorded, at the time of sale or transfer of the property, the title company will encounter the lien and will need it removed prior to completing the sale or transfer.
Many counties across the United States offer recorded document searches to the public. There are no clear requirements regarding how to provide recorded document searches that all agencies follow. Many of the counties however will offer instructions on how to obtain the information or have an online search.
