    Licenses

A license search can verify status and other details. In most states, professional license searches can be conducted using the secretary of state’s website. There is no charge and it is an instant search done online by people everyday.

Are license searches free in California? How long do they take and where do you get them from?

This is a common question asked by many employers and individuals looking to hire contractors and other professionals. There are different types of licenses and different sources with their own guidelines. Some information is made public per state laws and others are protected due to privacy. Drivers license verification and divers records are not made available to the public online, however, the steps and requirements in obtaining the information is listed on the DMV’s website. This may be a common search requested as employers looking for drivers tend to require driver’s records prior to hiring.

Professional licenses are handled differently. The reason for free and easy access is that the state requires these licenses by the professionals in protection of the public and therefore also allows verification by anyone. Generally licenses are issued by the state and people looking up the information can do so statewide as opposed to searching from one area to another. California provides a site by the department of Consumer Affairs where many licenses can be searched, but your if the profession is not listed, you should also look for the specific entity or board that issues the information. A perfect example of this is the California State Bar. When checking the alphabetical list of professions, you will notice that attorneys are not listed. An attorney’s information is readily available online instantly for free by the state bar on its own site. The license information of the attorney includes when they were admitted to the bar, location, status of the license, area of practices listed, disciplinary actions, education background and few other details.

All searches are not of individual but of entities as well. Contractor companies, cemeteries, dental offices and other licensed facilities can be searched under their business names. This is important to remember as many professionals work under a firms name or license. Searching a business is even easier than an individual as you can also access the Better Business Bureau for ratings and any reported past problems.

There are reviews online of just about any entity, but the source of the information being considered, these are credible ways of finding out about a professionally licensed individual.
