Trademarks
A trademark is a brand name that includes but is not limited to words, symbols and names that identify products bought and sold by manufacturers. Registration of a trademark gives the owner the exclusive right to use the mark with goods or services specified in the registration.
Once you have determined that you need a trademark you can begin to familiarize yourself with the rules and requirements at http://www.copyright.gov/records/cohm.html. There you will find basic facts about trademarks, how to register and file for a trademark as well as how to perform a trademark search.

I read that Charlie Sheen is going to register trademarks on some of his recent catchy phrases like: 'Duh, winning.' and 'Rock star from Mars', and even 'Tiger Blood'. From what I understand he's looking at trademarking 22 different catchphrases. Of course he may have a battle trying to trademark 'Adonis DNA' because two other people beat him to the punch. Apparently they want to use them for a line of clothing and some nutritional supplements. But the question that keeps echoing in my head is 'why'?????

Well now two rival wine makers are fighting over the world 'Mommy' on their labels. 'Mommyjuice' -vs- 'Mommy's Time Out'. 'Mommy's Time Out' is distributed out of New Jersey and is trademarked. Clos Lachance Wines the maker of 'Mommyjuice argues that the word 'Mommy' is generic and one cannot have a monopoly on it. It will be interesting to see which little ol' winemaker wins this one.
