As there may be more than one source to obtaining Colorado criminal, civil and divorce records, it is important to search multiple state courts to find the correct records.
Colorado State Court Structure:
The Colorado municipal courts hear cases involving moving traffic violations, parking violations, and other miscellaneous traffic violations. The municipal courts have exclusive jurisdiction to hear cases involving ordinance violations. The Colorado county courts have jurisdiction to hear cases involving torts, contracts, and real property rights ($0/$15,000). The county courts have exclusive jurisdiction over small claims matters with amounts in dispute from $0 to $7,500. The county courts hear cases involving felonies, and criminal appeals, with exclusive jurisdiction over misdemeanors, DWI or DUI matters. The county courts hear cases involving moving traffic violations, and other miscellaneous traffic violations. Preliminary hearings are held in county courts as well. Colorado water courts have jurisdiction over cases involving real property rights. Denver city has its own juvenile courts, which exclusively hear juvenile matters involving adoption, support and custody in Denver. Denver also has probate courts, with exclusive estate, and mental health jurisdiction in Denver. The state's trial courts are the district courts. The district courts have jurisdiction to hear cases involving torts, contracts, real property rights, estate, civil appeals, mental health, and other miscellaneous civil matters. The district courts have exclusive domestic relations jurisdiction. The district courts hear felony matters, criminal appeals, and other miscellaneous criminal matters, with exclusive juvenile jurisdiction except in Denver. Jury trials are permitted in matters, except in appeals cases. The Colorado court of appeals have mandatory jurisdiction in cases involving civil, noncapital criminal, administrative agency, and juvenile cases. No discretionary jurisdiction. Colorado's highest court is the supreme court, with mandatory jurisdiction in civil, capital criminal, criminal, administrative agency, juvenile, disciplinary, advisory opinion, original proceeding, and interlocutory decision cases. The supreme court has discretion (rather than mandatory) to hear cases involving civil, noncapital criminal, administrative agency, juvenile, advisory opinion, and original proceeding cases.
