New Jersey State Court Structure:
The New Jersey tax court hears state and local matters. The New Jersey municipal court has jurisdiction over felony, misdemeanor, and DWI/DUI cases. The municipal court has exclusive traffic/other violation jurisdiction. The New Jersey superior court, civil, family, general equity, and criminal divisions have exclusive civil jurisdiction ($0/no maximum; special civil part: $0/$15,000) (note the uncontested estate cases are handled by the surrogates). These courts have small claims jurisdiction of up to $3,000. The New Jersey superior court, civil, family, general equity, and criminal divisions have exclusive domestic relations jurisdiction, general jurisdiction over felony cases and exclusive criminal appeals, and miscellaneous criminal jurisdiction. The New Jersey superior court, civil, family, general equity, and criminal divisions have exclusive juvenile jurisdiction. The New Jersey appellate division of the superior court has mandatory jurisdiction in civil, noncapital criminal, juvenile, and administrative agency cases. The New Jersey appellate division of the superior court has discretionary jurisdiction in interlocutory decision cases. The New Jersey supreme court has mandatory jurisdiction in civil, capital criminal, criminal, administrative agency, juvenile, disciplinary, and original proceeding cases. The New Jersey supreme court has discretionary jurisdiction in civil, noncapital criminal, administrative agency appeals, juvenile, disciplinary, certified questions from federal courts, and interlocutory decision cases.
