Washington State Court Structure:
Washington municipal courts have jurisdiction to hear cases that involve misdemeanors, DWI or DUI matters, domestic violence matters, moving traffic violations, parking violations, miscellaneous traffic violations, and ordinance violations. Washington district courts are the state's trial courts. These courts have jurisdiction to hear cases that involve tort, contract from $0 to $50,000. District courts have exclusive small claims jurisdiction, $4,000. Jurisdiction further extends to various misdemeanors, DWI or DUI matters, domestic violence cases, moving traffic violations, parking violations, and other miscellaneous non-traffic violations. District courts hold venue to preliminary hearings. Jury trials are available in district courts, except in traffic and parking matters. Washington's magistrate courts have jurisdiction to hear cases that involve tort, contract, real property rights from $0 to $5,000, misdemeanors, DWI or DUI matters, domestic, violence matters, moving traffic violations, and other miscellaneous traffic violations. Magistrate courts hold venue to preliminary hearings. Jury trials are available in magistrate courts. Washington's superior courts have jurisdiction to hear cases that involve torts, and contracts from $0 and up. Superior courts have exclusive jurisdiction over real property rights from $0 and up, estate, mental health, civil appeals, and other miscellaneous civil matters. These courts further have exclusive jurisdiction to hear cases that involve domestic relations, felonies, criminal appeals matters, and juvenile matters. Washington's court of appeals has mandatory jurisdiction to hear cases involving civil, non-capital criminal, administrative agency, juvenile, and original proceeding matters. These courts have discretionary jurisdiction in administrative agency, and interlocutory decision cases. Washington's highest court is the supreme court. The supreme court has mandatory jurisdiction to hear civil, capital criminal, criminal, administrative agency, juvenile, and certified questions from federal court cases. The supreme court has discretionary jurisdiction in civil, non-capital criminal, administrative agency, juvenile, disciplinary, original proceeding, and interlocutory decision cases.

The district courts in Washington State are a court of limited jurisdiction. These courts have concurrent jurisdiction with superior courts over misdemeanor and gross misdemeanor violations and civil cases under $50,000. They have exclusive jurisdiction over small claims and infractions.
