Appling County is a county located in the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 18,236. The county seat is Baxley. The county was created on December 15, 1818.
Government
Appling County is governed by a five-member Board of Commissioners, elected from single-member districts. The Board is the legislative and policy-making body of the county government. The Board sets the millage rate, adopts the annual budget, and appoints the County Manager.
The County Manager is the chief administrative officer of the county government. The Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the county and for implementing the policies and directives of the Board of Commissioners.
The Appling County Sheriff's Office is responsible for law enforcement in the county. The Sheriff is elected by the citizens of Appling County.
Demographics
As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 18,236 people, 6,945 households, and 4,945 families residing in the county. The population density was 39.3 inhabitants per square mile (15.2/km2). There were 8,072 housing units at an average density of 17.2 per square mile (6.6/km2). The racial makeup of the county was 68.2% white, 28.7% black or African American, 0.5% Asian, 0.3% American Indian, 0.9% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Those of Hispanic or Latino origin made up 2.2% of the population. In terms of ancestry, 16.2% were American, 8.2% were English, and 7.2% were Irish.
Education
Appling County is served by the Appling County School District, which operates seven elementary schools, two middle schools, and two high schools. The district also operates an alternative school and a virtual school. The district has approximately 4,000 students and employs over 500 teachers and staff.
