Atkinson County is a county located in the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 8,375. The county seat is Pearson. The county was created on August 15, 1917.

Government

Atkinson County is governed by a five-member Board of Commissioners, elected from single-member districts. The Chairman of the Board is elected at-large. The current Chairman is Robert D. "Bob" McLeod.

The county also has a Sheriff, currently Sheriff David Moore, and a Probate Judge, currently Judge Robert D. McLeod.

Demographics

As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 8,375 people, 3,093 households, and 2,213 families residing in the county. The population density was 24.2 inhabitants per square mile (9.3/km2). There were 3,717 housing units at an average density of 10.7 per square mile (4.1/km2). The racial makeup of the county was 57.2% white, 40.2% black or African American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% American Indian, 0.7% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Those of Hispanic or Latino origin made up 1.7% of the population. In terms of ancestry, 11.2% were American, 8.2% were English, and 6.2% were Irish.

Of the 3,093 households, 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.2% were married couples living together, 19.2% had a female householder with no husband present, 28.2% were non-families, and 24.7% of all households were made up of individuals. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.09. The median age was 39.2 years.

The median income for a household in the county was $30,945 and the median income for a family was $37,917. Males had a median income of $30,945 versus $25,813 for females. The per capita income for the county was $14,945. About 17.2% of families and 21.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.2% of those under age 18 and 18.2% of those age 65 or over.
