Baker County is a county located in the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 3,451. The county seat is Newton. The county was created on December 11, 1825.
Government
Baker County is governed by a five-member Board of Commissioners, which is elected from single-member districts. The current chairman of the board is Robert L. "Bobby" Johnson.
The county is also served by a sheriff, a tax commissioner, a probate judge, a clerk of superior court, a magistrate court judge, and a state court judge.
Demographics
As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 3,451 people, 1,323 households, and 945 families residing in the county. The population density was 16.2 inhabitants per square mile (6.3/km2). There were 1,717 housing units at an average density of 8.2 per square mile (3.2/km2). The racial makeup of the county was 68.2% white, 28.7% black or African American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% American Indian, 0.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Those of Hispanic or Latino origin made up 2.2% of the population. In terms of ancestry, 16.2% were American, 8.2% were Irish, and 6.2% were English.
Of the 1,323 households, 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 17.7% had a female householder with no husband present, 28.2% were non-families, and 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.08. The median age was 39.2 years.
The median income for a household in the county was $31,944 and the median income for a family was $37,917. Males had a median income of $30,917 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the county was $15,945. About 17.2% of families and 20.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.2% of those under age 18 and 16.2% of those age 65 or over.
