Barrow County is a county located in the north central portion of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 69,367. The county seat is Winder.
Government
Barrow County is governed by a five-member Board of Commissioners, which is elected from single-member districts. The Board of Commissioners is responsible for setting the county's tax rate, adopting the annual budget, and setting policies for county government.
The county is also served by a Superior Court judge, a State Court judge, a Probate Court judge, a Sheriff, a Clerk of Court, a Tax Commissioner, and a Coroner.
Demographics
As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 69,367 people, 25,845 households, and 19,072 families residing in the county. The population density was 186.3 inhabitants per square mile (71.9/km2). There were 28,845 housing units at an average density of 76.7 per square mile (29.6/km2). The racial makeup of the county was 84.2% white, 10.7% black or African American, 0.7% Asian, 0.3% American Indian, 2.7% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Those of Hispanic or Latino origin made up 5.7% of the population. In terms of ancestry, 16.2% were American, 11.3% were Irish, 10.7% were English, and 8.2% were German.
Of the 25,845 households, 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 13.3% had a female householder with no husband present, 27.2% were non-families, and 22.2% of all households were made up of individuals. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.11. The median age was 36.2 years.
