Brantley County is a county located in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 19,444. The county seat is Nahunta.

Government

Brantley County is governed by a five-member Board of Commissioners, which is elected from single-member districts. The Board of Commissioners is responsible for setting the county's tax rate, adopting the annual budget, and setting policies for county government.

The county is also served by a Superior Court judge, a State Court judge, a Probate Court judge, a Sheriff, a Tax Commissioner, and a Clerk of Court.

Demographics

As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 19,444 people, 7,541 households, and 5,541 families residing in the county. The population density was 33.3 inhabitants per square mile (12.9/km2). There were 8,717 housing units at an average density of 14.9 per square mile (5.8/km2). The racial makeup of the county was 79.2% white, 17.7% black or African American, 0.7% Asian, 0.3% American Indian, 0.9% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Those of Hispanic or Latino origin made up 2.2% of the population. In terms of ancestry, 16.2% were English, 15.2% were American, and 13.2% were Irish.

Education

Brantley County is served by the Brantley County School District, which operates seven elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school. The district also operates an alternative school and an adult education center.
