Government

Clayton County is governed by a five-member Board of Commissioners, which is elected from single-member districts. The chairman of the board is elected county-wide. The county also has a county manager, who is appointed by the board.

As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 259,424 people, 91,534 households, and 64,109 families residing in the county. The population density was 1,154.2 inhabitants per square mile (446.7/km2). There were 101,028 housing units at an average density of 447.9 per square mile (173.1/km2). The racial makeup of the county was 48.2% White, 38.4% African American, 0.4% Native American, 4.1% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 6.1% from other races, and 2.7% from two or more races. Those of Hispanic or Latino origin made up 11.9% of the population.

Education

Clayton County Public Schools operates public schools. The county is also home to several private schools, including Mount Zion Christian Academy, St. Pius X Catholic High School, and the Clayton County International Academy. The county is also home to several colleges and universities, including Clayton State University, Georgia State University-Clayton, and Georgia Perimeter College.
