There were 19,845 housing units at an average density of 24.5 per square mile (9.5/km2). The racial makeup of the county was 68.2% white, 28.2% black or African American, 0.7% Asian, 0.3% American Indian, 0.1% Pacific islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Those of Hispanic or Latino origin made up 2.9% of the population.

In terms of ancestry, 16.2% were American, 8.7% were English, and 8.3% were Irish.

The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.09. The median age was 37.2 years.
