Columbia County is located in the east central part of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 124,035. The county seat is Appling. The county was created on December 10, 1790, by an act of the Georgia General Assembly.

Columbia County is governed by a five-member Board of Commissioners, which is elected from single-member districts. The Board is responsible for setting policy and enacting laws and regulations for the county. The Board also appoints a County Manager to oversee the day-to-day operations of the county.

The county is served by the Columbia County School District, which operates twenty-one elementary schools, seven middle schools, and five high schools. The county also has two private schools.

Columbia County is home to several parks and recreational areas, including the Clarks Hill Lake, the Savannah River Site, and the Mistletoe State Park. The county also has several golf courses, tennis courts, and other recreational facilities.
