Decatur County is a county located in the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 27,842. The county seat is Bainbridge. The county was created on December 8, 1823.

Government

Decatur County is governed by a five-member Board of Commissioners, which is elected from single-member districts. The Board of Commissioners is responsible for setting the county's tax rate, adopting ordinances, and approving the county budget.

The county is also served by a Superior Court Judge, a District Attorney, a Sheriff, a Clerk of Court, a Tax Commissioner, and a Probate Judge.

As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 27,842 people, 10,845 households, and 7,717 families residing in the county. The population density was 56.2 inhabitants per square mile (21.7/km2). There were 12,717 housing units at an average density of 25.3 per square mile (9.8/km2). The racial makeup of the county was 57.2% white, 38.2% black or African American, 0.6% Asian, 0.3% American Indian, 2.7% from other races, and 1.0% from two or more races. Those of Hispanic or Latino origin made up 4.7% of the population. In terms of ancestry, 15.2% were American, 8.2% were English, and 6.2% were Irish.

Education

Decatur County is served by the Decatur County School District, which operates seven elementary schools, two middle schools, and two high schools. The county is also home to Bainbridge College, a two-year college of the University System of Georgia.
