Echols County is a county located in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 4,034. The county seat is Statenville. The county was created on December 15, 1858.

Echols County Historical Facts

1. The Battle of Echols County (1864) - During the Civil War, Confederate forces under the command of General Joseph Wheeler fought Union forces under the command of General William T. Sherman in Echols County. The Confederate forces were defeated, and the Union forces continued their march to the sea.

2. The Great Locomotive Chase (1864) - During the Civil War, a group of Union soldiers, led by James J. Andrews, stole a Confederate locomotive in Big Shanty, Georgia and attempted to destroy the Western and Atlantic Railroad in Echols County. The mission failed, and Andrews and his men were captured and later executed.

3. The Echols County Courthouse (1890) - The Echols County Courthouse was built in 1890 and is still in use today. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

4. The Echols County Fair (1902) - The Echols County Fair was established in 1902 and is still held annually. It is one of the oldest county fairs in the state of Georgia.
