Elbert County is a county located in the northeastern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 20,166. The county seat is Elberton.
Government
Elbert County is governed by a five-member Board of Commissioners, elected from single-member districts. The Chairman of the Board is elected at-large. The current Chairman is Ricky T. Smith.
The county is served by a Superior Court judge, elected to a four-year term, and a State Court judge, elected to a four-year term.
The Elbert County Sheriff's Office is responsible for law enforcement in the county. The current Sheriff is Sid F. Harpe.
Demographics
As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 20,166 people, 7,845 households, and 5,541 families residing in the county. The population density was 44.3 inhabitants per square mile (17.1/km2). There were 9,072 housing units at an average density of 19.9 per square mile (7.7/km2). The racial makeup of the county was 68.2% white, 28.7% black or African American, 0.4% Asian, 0.3% American Indian, 0.9% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Those of Hispanic or Latino origin made up 2.2% of the population. In terms of ancestry, 16.2% were American, 8.2% were English, and 7.2% were Irish.
Of the 7,845 households, 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.2% were married couples living together, 15.7% had a female householder with no husband present, 29.7% were non-families, and 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.00. The median age was 40.2 years.
