Emanuel County is a county located in the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 22,598. The county seat is Swainsboro. The county was created on December 10, 1812.

Government

Emanuel County is governed by a five-member Board of Commissioners, which is elected from single-member districts. The Board of Commissioners is responsible for setting the budget, levying taxes, and setting policy for the county.

Demographics

As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 22,598 people, 8,541 households, and 6,039 families residing in the county. The population density was 44.2 inhabitants per square mile (17.1/km2). There were 9,845 housing units at an average density of 19.1 per square mile (7.4/km2). The racial makeup of the county was 63.2% white, 33.2% black or African American, 0.4% Asian, 0.2% American Indian, 1.9% from other races, and 0.9% from two or more races. Those of Hispanic or Latino origin made up 3.2% of the population. In terms of ancestry, 16.2% were American, 8.2% were Irish, and 6.3% were English.

Education

Emanuel County is served by the Emanuel County School District, which operates seven elementary schools, two middle schools, and two high schools. The county is also home to several private schools.

Emanuel County Historical Facts
