Gilmer County is a county located in the north central portion of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 28,292. The county seat is Ellijay.
Government
Gilmer County is governed by a five-member Board of Commissioners, which is elected from single-member districts. The Board of Commissioners is responsible for setting policies and adopting ordinances and resolutions. The Board also appoints a County Manager to oversee the day-to-day operations of the county.
The county is also served by a Superior Court Judge, a State Court Judge, a Probate Judge, a Sheriff, a Clerk of Court, a Tax Commissioner, and a Coroner.
Demographics
As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 28,292 people, 10,945 households, and 7,945 families residing in the county. The population density was 56.3 inhabitants per square mile (21.8/km2). There were 14,945 housing units at an average density of 29.2 per square mile (11.3/km2). The racial makeup of the county was 96.2% white, 0.9% black or African American, 0.5% Asian, 0.3% American Indian, 0.9% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Those of Hispanic or Latino origin made up 2.7% of the population. In terms of ancestry, 16.2% were American, 11.7% were Irish, 11.3% were English, and 8.2% were German.
Of the 10,945 households, 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, 25.3% were non-families, and 21.2% of all households were made up of individuals. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 2.95. The median age was 41.2 years.
