Glascock County is a county located in the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 3,082, making it the second-least populous county in Georgia. The county seat is Gibson. The county was created on December 14, 1857.

Government

Glascock County is governed by a five-member Board of Commissioners, which is elected from single-member districts. The Board of Commissioners is responsible for setting the county's tax rate, adopting the annual budget, and approving county ordinances.

The county is also served by a Probate Judge, who is elected to a four-year term, and a Sheriff, who is elected to a four-year term.

Demographics

As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 3,082 people, 1,093 households, and 790 families living in the county. The population density was 16.2 inhabitants per square mile (6.3/km2). There were 1,323 housing units at an average density of 6.9 per square mile (2.7/km2). The racial makeup of the county was 68.2% white, 29.2% black or African American, 0.3% Asian, 0.3% American Indian, 0.7% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Those of Hispanic or Latino origin made up 1.7% of the population. In terms of ancestry, 16.2% were American, 8.2% were English, and 6.2% were Irish.

Of the 1,093 households, 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, 28.2% were non-families, and 24.3% of all households were made up of individuals. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.09. The median age was 39.7 years.

The median income for a household in the county was $35,938 and the median income for a family was $41,944. Males had a median income of $30,917 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the county was $15,945. About 14.2% of families and 17.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 24.2% of those under age 18 and 15.2% of those age 65 or over.
