The county has a total area of 2,945 square miles. The county is home to the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest, the Coronado National Forest, and the Gila National Forest. The county is also home to the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation.

The economy of the county is largely based on agriculture, mining, and tourism.
