Harris County was created on December 14, 1827, from a portion of Muscogee County. It was named for Charles Harris, a state senator from the area.

The county government is led by a five-member Board of Commissioners, which is elected from single-member districts. The county also has a sheriff, a tax commissioner, a probate judge, a clerk of superior court, and a coroner.

The county is served by the Harris County School District, which operates seven elementary schools, two middle schools, and two high schools.
