Harris County was created on December 14, 1827, from a portion of Muscogee County. It was named for Charles Harris, a state senator from the area.
The county government is led by a five-member Board of Commissioners, which is elected from single-member districts. The county also has a sheriff, a tax commissioner, a probate judge, a clerk of superior court, and a coroner.
The county is served by the Harris County School District, which operates seven elementary schools, two middle schools, and two high schools.
The county is home to several parks, including the Harris County Recreation Department, which offers a variety of recreational activities, including camping, fishing, and boating.
