Houston County is located in the southeastern corner of Alabama. It is part of the Dothan Metropolitan Statistical Area and is the fifth most populous county in the state. The county was established in 1903. The county seat is Dothan.

Houston County is governed by a five-member County Commission, elected from single-member districts. The County Commission is the legislative body of the county and is responsible for setting policy, levying taxes, and appropriating funds. The County Commission appoints a County Administrator to oversee the day-to-day operations of the county.

Houston County is home to several military installations, including Fort Rucker, the U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence, and the Army National Guard's Wiregrass Training Site. The county is also home to several state parks, including the Houston County Lake and the Houston County State Park.
