Government

Irwin County is governed by a five-member Board of Commissioners, which is elected from single-member districts. The Board of Commissioners is responsible for setting the county's tax rate, adopting the annual budget, and approving county ordinances.

As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 9,538 people, 3,717 households, and 2,541 families residing in the county. The population density was 33.3 inhabitants per square mile (12.9/km2). There were 4,521 housing units at an average density of 15.9 per square mile (6.1/km2). The racial makeup of the county was 68.2% white, 28.7% black or African American, 0.4% Asian, 0.3% American Indian, 0.9% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Those of Hispanic or Latino origin made up 2.2% of the population. In terms of ancestry, 16.2% were American, 8.2% were English, and 6.2% were Irish.

Education

Irwin County is served by the Irwin County School District, which operates four elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. The district also operates a virtual school program.
