Jefferson County is located in the state of Colorado and is the fourth most populous county in the state. The county seat is Golden, and the most populous city is Lakewood. It was founded in 1861 and is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The county government is composed of a three-member Board of County Commissioners, which is elected in nonpartisan elections to serve four-year terms. The other elected officials are the County Clerk and Recorder, the Sheriff, the Assessor, the Treasurer, the Coroner, and the Surveyor.

The county is divided into five districts, each of which is represented by one of the commissioners. The county is also served by a number of departments, including the Sheriff's Office, the Public Works Department, the Planning and Zoning Department, and the Parks and Recreation Department.
