Murray County is a county located in the northwestern part of the state of Georgia, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 39,628. The county seat is Chatsworth.

Murray County is part of the Dalton, GA Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Government

Murray County is governed by a five-member Board of Commissioners, elected from single-member districts. The Chairman of the Board is elected at-large.

The county is served by a Superior Court judge, elected in partisan elections, and a Probate Court judge, elected in nonpartisan elections.

The county is part of the Blue Ridge Judicial Circuit, which also includes Fannin and Gilmer counties.

Demographics

As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 39,628 people, 15,845 households, and 11,541 families residing in the county. The population density was 79.3 inhabitants per square mile (30.6/km2). There were 18,845 housing units at an average density of 37.6 per square mile (14.5/km2). The racial makeup of the county was 92.2% white, 3.7% black or African American, 0.5% Asian, 0.2% American Indian, 2.3% from other races, and 1.1% from two or more races. Those of Hispanic or Latino origin made up 4.7% of the population. In terms of ancestry, 16.2% were American, 11.7% were Irish, 11.3% were English, and 8.2% were German.

Of the 15,845 households, 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, 28.2% were non-families, and 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.93. The median age was 40.3 years.

The median income for a household in the county was $37,845 and the median income for a family was $45,845. Males had a median income of $36,845 versus $27,845 for females. The per capita income for the county was $19,845. About 11.2% of families and 14.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.2% of those under age 18 and 11.2% of those age 65 or over.
