Pickens County is a county located in the north central portion of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 29,431. The county seat is Jasper. The county was created on December 5, 1853.

Pickens County is part of the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell, GA Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Government

Pickens County is governed by a five-member Board of Commissioners, which is elected from single-member districts. The Board of Commissioners is responsible for setting policies and adopting ordinances and resolutions. The Board also appoints a County Manager to oversee the day-to-day operations of the county.

The Pickens County Sheriff's Office is responsible for law enforcement in the county. The Sheriff is elected to a four-year term.

The Pickens County Board of Education is responsible for the public schools in the county. The Board is composed of five members, each elected to a four-year term.

Demographics

As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 29,431 people, 11,717 households, and 8,072 families residing in the county. The population density was 79.3 inhabitants per square mile (30.6/km2). There were 13,837 housing units at an average density of 37.2 per square mile (14.4/km2). The racial makeup of the county was 87.2% white, 8.3% black or African American, 0.7% Asian, 0.3% American Indian, 1.9% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Those of Hispanic or Latino origin made up 4.2% of the population. In terms of ancestry, 16.2% were American, 11.3% were Irish, 10.2% were German, and 8.2% were English.

Of the 11,717 households, 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, 29.3% were non-families, and 24.3% of all households were made up of individuals. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 2.95. The median age was 41.2 years.
