Government
Pike County is governed by a five-member Board of Commissioners, which is elected from single-member districts. The Board of Commissioners is responsible for setting the county's tax rate, adopting the annual budget, and approving county ordinances.

As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 17,869 people, 6,717 households, and 4,845 families residing in the county. The population density was 57.3 inhabitants per square mile (22.1/km2). There were 7,717 housing units at an average density of 24.7 per square mile (9.5/km2). The racial makeup of the county was 68.2% white, 28.2% black or African American, 0.5% Asian, 0.3% American Indian, 1.7% from other races, and 1.1% from two or more races. Those of Hispanic or Latino origin made up 3.2% of the population. In terms of ancestry, 16.2% were American, 8.2% were Irish, and 6.3% were German.
Education
Pike County is served by the Pike County School District, which operates seven elementary schools, two middle schools, and two high schools. The county is also home to two private schools, Pike Christian Academy and Pike County Christian Academy.
