Polk County is a county located in the northwestern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 41,475. The county seat is Cedartown. The county was created on December 20, 1851.

Polk County is part of the Rome, GA Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Government

The county is governed by a five-member Board of Commissioners, which is elected from single-member districts. The current chairman is Trey Eubanks.

Demographics

As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 41,475 people, 15,945 households, and 11,541 families residing in the county. The population density was 79.3 inhabitants per square mile (30.6/km2). There were 17,845 housing units at an average density of 34.2 per square mile (13.2/km2). The racial makeup of the county was 73.2% white, 21.7% black or African American, 0.7% Asian, 0.3% American Indian, 3.2% from other races, and 1.1% from two or more races. Those of Hispanic or Latino origin made up 5.7% of the population. In terms of ancestry, 16.2% were American, 8.7% were Irish, and 8.3% were English.

Of the 15,945 households, 34.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, 28.2% were non-families, and 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.05. The median age was 38.2 years.
