Seminole County is a county located in the southwestern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 8,729. The county seat is Donalsonville.

Seminole County is part of the Thomasville, GA Micropolitan Statistical Area.

Government

Seminole County is governed by a five-member Board of Commissioners, which is elected from single-member districts. The current chairman is Roger Lane.

The county is served by a Superior Court judge, a State Court judge, a Probate Court judge, a Clerk of Superior Court, a Sheriff, a Tax Commissioner, and a Coroner.

Demographics

As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 8,729 people, 3,521 households, and 2,521 families residing in the county. The population density was 28.3 inhabitants per square mile (10.9/km2). There were 4,093 housing units at an average density of 13.2 per square mile (5.1/km2). The racial makeup of the county was 68.2% white, 29.3% black or African American, 0.4% Asian, 0.3% American Indian, 0.7% from other races, and 1.1% from two or more races. Those of Hispanic or Latino origin made up 1.7% of the population. In terms of ancestry, 11.2% were American, 8.2% were English, and 6.2% were Irish.

Of the 3,521 households, 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 17.7% had a female householder with no husband present, 28.7% were non-families, and 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.95. The median age was 41.2 years.

The median income for a household in the county was $32,917 and the median income for a family was $41,845. Males had a median income of $35,945 versus $25,845 for females. The per capita income for the county was $17,845. About 17.2% of families and 20.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.2% of those under age 18 and 16.2% of those age 65 or over.

It has jurisdiction over civil and criminal cases, including felonies, misdemeanors, and traffic violations. The court also handles appeals from lower courts. The court is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
