As an incorporated city, South Gate holds municipal elections for Mayor and City Council positions. The city has seven Council Members elected by district, plus a separately-elected Mayor. Municipal elections typically take place in March during even-numbered years, consolidated with the statewide primary election. The next municipal election will be in March 2026, when certain council seats and possibly the mayoral position will be on the ballot. The November 3, 2026 general election will include critical races for California and Los Angeles County voters. At the state level, all 80 California State Assembly seats will be on the ballot, along with 20 of the 40 California State Senate seats (half the Senate is elected every two years on a rotating basis). County voters will decide various county offices potentially including Los Angeles County Assessor, and various judicial seats for Los Angeles County Superior Court. No U.S. Senate seat from California is scheduled for election in 2026 (California's Senate seats are next up in 2028), and the California Governor's race is in 2026—Governor Gavin Newsom is term-limited, so 2026 will feature an open race for Governor with the primary in June 2026 and general election in November 2026. Municipal races in the city (if any are scheduled for 2026) would appear on the March 2026 primary ballot. Ballot measures at the state, county, and city levels may also appear. California provides universal vote-by-mail, meaning every registered voter automatically receives a vote-by-mail ballot sent to their registered address beginning 29 days before Election Day. Voters can complete and return the ballot by mail (postmarked by Election Day), drop it in an official ballot drop box (by 8:00 PM on Election Day), return it to any vote center in Los Angeles County, or choose to vote in person at a vote center instead.
