Toombs County is a county located in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 26,067. The county seat is Lyons. The county was created on August 18, 1905.

Government

Toombs County is governed by a five-member Board of Commissioners, which is elected from single-member districts. The Board of Commissioners is responsible for setting the county's tax rate, adopting the annual budget, and setting policies for county government.

The county is also served by a Superior Court judge, a State Court judge, a Probate Court judge, a Sheriff, a Clerk of Court, a Tax Commissioner, and a Coroner.

Demographics

As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 26,067 people, 9,945 households, and 6,945 families residing in the county. The population density was 54.3 inhabitants per square mile (21.0/km2). There were 11,541 housing units at an average density of 23.9 per square mile (9.2/km2). The racial makeup of the county was 68.2% white, 28.2% black or African American, 0.5% Asian, 0.3% American Indian, 1.7% from other races, and 1.1% from two or more races. Those of Hispanic or Latino origin made up 3.2% of the population. In terms of ancestry, 16.2% were American, 8.2% were Irish, and 6.3% were English.

Education

Toombs County is served by the Toombs County School District, which operates seven elementary schools, two middle schools, and two high schools. The county is also home to several private schools.

Toombs County Historical Facts

1. The Battle of Coffee Road: On April 16, 1865, Confederate forces under the command of General Robert Toombs clashed with Union forces led by General Henry Slocum in the Battle of Coffee Road. This was the last major battle of the Civil War in Georgia and resulted in a Confederate victory.

2. The Great Fire of 1871: On April 16, 1871, a devastating fire swept through the town of Lyons, Georgia, destroying much of the town. The fire was started by a spark from a passing locomotive and quickly spread, destroying over 200 buildings and leaving many homeless.

3. The Toombs County Courthouse Fire of 1876: On August 15, 1876, a fire broke out in the Toombs County Courthouse, destroying much of the building and its records. The fire was believed to have been started by an arsonist, but the culprit was never found.

4. The Great Toombs County Tornado of 1898: On April 12, 1898, a powerful tornado swept through Toombs County, killing at least 11 people and destroying many homes and businesses. The tornado was one of the deadliest in Georgia history.
