Troup County is located in the west-central part of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 67,044. The county seat is LaGrange.

Government

Troup County is governed by a five-member Board of Commissioners, which is elected from single-member districts. The Board is the legislative and policy-making body of the county government. The Board sets the millage rate, adopts ordinances, and approves the county budget.

The county is also served by a Sheriff, Tax Commissioner, Clerk of Superior Court, Probate Judge, and Coroner.

Demographics

As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 67,044 people, 25,844 households, and 17,845 families residing in the county. The population density was 166.3 inhabitants per square mile (64.2/km2). There were 28,844 housing units at an average density of 71.2 per square mile (27.5/km2). The racial makeup of the county was 57.2% white, 38.7% black or African American, 0.6% Asian, 0.3% American Indian, 2.2% from other races, and 1.0% from two or more races. Those of Hispanic or Latino origin made up 4.3% of the population. In terms of ancestry, 16.2% were American, 8.2% were Irish, and 6.3% were German.

Of the 25,844 households, 33.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.2% were married couples living together, 18.7% had a female householder with no husband present, 31.2% were non-families, and 26.7% of all households were made up of individuals. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.04. The median age was 36.7 years.

Troup County Historical Facts

1. The Battle of West Point (April 16, 1865): During the American Civil War, the Battle of West Point was fought in Troup County, Georgia. Confederate forces under General Joseph E. Johnston attempted to stop Union forces under General William T. Sherman from crossing the Chattahoochee River. The Union forces were successful in crossing the river and the Confederate forces were forced to retreat.

2. The Great Locomotive Chase (April 12, 1862): During the American Civil War, the Great Locomotive Chase occurred in Troup County, Georgia. A group of Union soldiers, led by James J. Andrews, stole a Confederate locomotive and attempted to destroy the Western and Atlantic Railroad. The Union soldiers were eventually captured and eight of them were executed by the Confederate Army.

3. The Battle of LaGrange (July 30, 1864): During the American Civil War, the Battle of LaGrange was fought in Troup County, Georgia. Union forces under General William T. Sherman attempted to capture the town of LaGrange from Confederate forces under General Joseph E. Johnston. The Union forces were successful in capturing the town and the Confederate forces were forced to retreat.
