Upson County Georgia Public Records

Upson County is a county located in the west central portion of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 27,153. The county seat is Thomaston. The county was created on December 15, 1824.

Upson County is part of the Macon, GA Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Government

Upson County is governed by a five-member Board of Commissioners, elected from single-member districts. The Chairman of the Board is elected county-wide. The current Chairman is Robert L. Henderson.

The county is served by a Superior Court judge, elected county-wide, and a State Court judge, elected from the Thomaston Judicial Circuit.

The county is also served by a Sheriff, elected county-wide, and a Probate Judge, elected county-wide.

Demographics

As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 27,153 people, 10,541 households, and 7,541 families residing in the county. The population density was 56.2 inhabitants per square mile (21.7/km2). There were 11,945 housing units at an average density of 24.5 per square mile (9.5/km2). The racial makeup of the county was 65.2% white, 31.2% black or African American, 0.5% Asian, 0.2% American Indian, 2.2% from other races, and 0.7% from two or more races. Those of Hispanic or Latino origin made up 3.7% of the population. In terms of ancestry, 16.2% were American, 8.2% were Irish, and 6.3% were English.

Of the 10,541 households, 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 17.7% had a female householder with no husband present, 28.7% were non-families, and 24.7% of all households were made up of individuals. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.02. The median age was 38.7 years.
