The state requires voters to provide their Social Security number, date of birth, and either a valid Virginia driver's license number or DMV-issued ID number. First-time voters who register by mail and have not previously voted in Virginia may need to provide identification when voting. The town holds its own municipal elections for Town Council and Mayor. Looking ahead to the November 3, 2026 general election, Virginia voters will decide several key races: Virginia does not hold gubernatorial elections in 2026 (the governor serves a four-year term with the next election in 2025), but all 100 seats in the Virginia House of Delegates are up for election in 2025 and all 40 Virginia State Senate seats are elected on a staggered basis with elections in odd years. In 2026, local voters will participate in federal midterm elections, including Virginia's two U.S. Senate seats; the Class 2 Senate seat currently held by Mark Warner will be on the ballot in 2026. Virginia's 6th Congressional District seat, which includes Vinton and Roanoke County, will be up for election. County offices that may appear on the 2026 ballot include Board of Supervisors seats, Sheriff, Commissioner of the Revenue, Treasurer, Commonwealth's Attorney, and Clerk of Circuit Court, depending on term schedules. Virginia permits absentee voting both by mail and in-person; any registered voter may request an absentee ballot without providing an excuse. Applications for mail absentee ballots must be received by the Roanoke County Elections Office by 5:00 PM on the Friday before Election Day (October 30, 2026 for the November 3, 2026 election). In-person early voting is available at the Roanoke County elections office beginning 45 days before the election and ending at 5:00 PM on the Saturday before Election Day.
