White County is a county located in the north central portion of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 27,144. The county seat is Cleveland. The county was created on December 22, 1857.

White County is part of the Cleveland, GA Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Government

White County is governed by a five-member Board of Commissioners, elected from single-member districts. The Chairman of the Board is elected county-wide.

The current Chairman of the Board is Travis Turner. The other four members are:

Education

White County is served by the White County School District, which operates seven elementary schools, two middle schools, and two high schools.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 22,202 people, 8,541 households, and 6,279 families residing in the county. The population density was 68 people per square mile (26/km^2). There were 9,845 housing units at an average density of 30 per squaremile (12/km^2). The racial makeup of the county was 96.17% White, 1.90% Black or African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.50% from other races, and 0.91% from two or more races. 1.50% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 8,541 households, out of which 33.00% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.90% were married couples living together, 10.00% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.50% were non-families. 23.00% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.00% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.01.

In the county, the population was spread out, with 25.50% under the age of 18, 8.10% from 18 to 24, 28.90% from 25 to 44, 23.50% from 45 to 64, and 14.00% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 96.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $35,843, and the median income for a family was $41,817. Males had a median income of $30,917 versus $21,813 for females. The per capita income for the county was $17,945. About 9.90% of families and 12.90% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.90% of those under age 18 and 14.90% of those age 65 or over.
