About Appomattox County, Virginia
Appomattox County is governed by a five-member Board of Supervisors. The Board is elected by the citizens of the county and is responsible for setting the county's budget, levying taxes, and making policy decisions. The Board meets twice a month.
The county is also served by a Constitutional Officer, the Sheriff, who is elected by the citizens of the county. The Sheriff is responsible for law enforcement, court security, and jail operations.
Appomattox County is located in south-central Virginia, about 90 miles southwest of Richmond. It is bordered by Buckingham, Prince Edward, Charlotte, Campbell, and Nelson counties. The county seat is Appomattox.
Appomattox County is home to the Appomattox Court House National Historical Park, which marks the site of the surrender of General Robert E. Lee to General Ulysses S. Grant in 1865, effectively ending the Civil War.
