Bedford County is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia and is part of the Lynchburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The county seat is the town of Bedford. The county was founded in 1753.
The county government is made up of a Board of Supervisors, which is the legislative body of the county, and a County Administrator, who is the executive officer of the county. The Board of Supervisors is composed of seven members, each elected from one of seven magisterial districts. The County Administrator is appointed by the Board of Supervisors and is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the county.
The county is served by the Bedford County Public Schools system, which consists of 14 elementary schools, four middle schools, and four high schools. The county is also served by the Bedford County Sheriff's Office, which is responsible for law enforcement in the county.
