Calvert County is governed by a five-member Board of County Commissioners, which is elected at-large to four-year terms. The county is divided into five districts, each of which is represented by one commissioner. The county is also served by a county executive, who is elected to a four-year term.
The county is home to several state parks, including Calvert Cliffs State Park, Battle Creek Cypress Swamp Sanctuary, and Flag Ponds Nature Park. The county also has several historic sites, including the Calvert Marine Museum, the Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum, and the Calvert County Historical Society.
The county's economy is largely based on agriculture, with the top crops being corn, soybeans, and wheat. Other industries include manufacturing, retail, and tourism. The county is served by two public school systems, Calvert County Public Schools and St. Mary's County Public Schools.
