Champaign County is located in east-central Illinois and is part of the Champaign-Urbana metropolitan area. The county seat is Urbana.
The county was created in 1833 and was organized in 1859. It is named after Champaign County, Ohio, which in turn was named for the French word for "open level country".
The county is governed by a seven-member board of commissioners, who are elected to four-year terms. The county also has a county executive, who is elected to a four-year term. The county is divided into nine townships, which are administered by elected trustees.
The county is served by the Champaign County Sheriff's Office, the Champaign County State's Attorney's Office, and the Champaign County Circuit Clerk's Office. The county is also served by the Champaign County Health Department, the Champaign County Regional Planning Commission, and the Champaign County Emergency Management Agency.
The county is home to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Parkland College, and several other higher education institutions. It is also home to several major employers, including the Carle Foundation Hospital, the University of Illinois, and the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District.
