The county government consists of a Board of County Commissioners, which is the legislative branch, and a County Administrator, which is the executive branch. The Board of County Commissioners is composed of five members, each elected from a single-member district. The Board is responsible for setting policy, passing ordinances, and adopting the annual budget. The County Administrator is responsible for carrying out the policies and directives of the Board of County Commissioners.

The economy of Citrus County is based largely on tourism, agriculture, and manufacturing. The county is home to numerous state parks and nature preserves, including the Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge and Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park.
