Cochran County is located in the northwestern part of Texas and is part of the Lubbock Metropolitan Statistical Area. The county seat is Morton. The population of the county is 3,699 as of the 2020 census.
Cochran County was created in 1876 and organized in 1924. The county has a total area of 919 square miles, and is composed of mostly flat to rolling terrain.
The county is governed by a four-member Commissioners Court, with each member representing one of four precincts. The county judge presides as the chief administrator of the county. Other elected officials include the sheriff, district attorney, county clerk, tax assessor-collector, and county treasurer.
The county is served by the Morton Independent School District.
The main economic activities in the county are farming and ranching. Major crops grown in the county include cotton, sorghum, and wheat. The major industries in the county are oil and gas production, and education.
