Connecticut abolished its county sheriffs in 2000 through state constitutional amendment. County governments were also abolished. The former duties of sheriffs are now split between the State Marshal Commission (civil process, prisoner transport) and the Judicial Marshal Services (courthouse security, prisoner custody). Local police departments and resident state troopers handle community law enforcement.
