About Elko County, Nevada
Elko County is located in the northeastern corner of Nevada and is the fourth largest county in the state. It is bordered by Humboldt County to the north, White Pine County to the east, Eureka County to the south, and Lander and Elko Counties to the west. The county seat is Elko, and the largest city is Elko.
The county is governed by a five-member Board of County Commissioners. Each member of the board is elected for a 4-year term.
The county was established in 1869 and is named after the Elko band of the Shoshone Indians. The county is home to the Ruby Mountains, the Humboldt National Forest, and the South Fork State Recreation Area. The economy of Elko County is largely based on mining, ranching, and tourism. The county is also home to the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering, held annually in Elko.
The county is served by a variety of transportation options including the Union Pacific Railroad, I-80, and U.S. Route 93. Elko County Regional Airport provides air services to the area.
