The county is governed by a four-member Commissioners Court, with one commissioner representing each of the four precincts in the county. The county judge is the presiding officer of the court, and is elected county-wide. Other members of the court are the county clerk, district clerk, sheriff, and tax assessor-collector, all of whom are elected county-wide.
The county is served by the Fisher County Independent School District, which consists of two elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school.
Fisher County is part of the Big Country region of Texas and is home to several state parks, including Abilene State Park, Lake Brownwood State Park, and Lake Colorado City State Park. The county is also home to the historic Fort Phantom Hill, which was established in 1851.
