Gaines County is located in the western part of Texas, in the South Plains region. It is bordered by Andrews County to the north, Dawson County to the east, Martin County to the south, and Yoakum County to the west. The county seat is Seminole.
The county is governed by a four-member Commissioners Court, with one commissioner representing each of the four precincts in the county. The county judge is the presiding officer of the court, and is elected county-wide. Other members of the court are elected from their respective precincts.
The county is served by the Gaines County Sheriff's Office, which is responsible for law enforcement and the operation of the county jail. The county is also served by the Gaines County Fire Department, which provides fire protection and emergency medical services.
Gaines County is part of the Midland-Odessa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The county is home to several oil and gas production facilities, as well as a number of agricultural operations. The county is also home to the Seminole State Park, which offers camping, fishing, and other recreational activities.
