About Hampshire County, Massachusetts
Hampshire County is located in the western part of Massachusetts and is part of the Pioneer Valley region. It is the most populous county in the state, with a population of approximately 160,000. The county seat is Northampton.
The county government is composed of a Board of Commissioners, which is the legislative body, and an Executive Office, which is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the county. The Board of Commissioners is composed of five members, each elected to a four-year term. The Executive Office is headed by the County Administrator, who is appointed by the Board of Commissioners.
The county is divided into 24 towns and two cities, Northampton and Easthampton. The county is also home to the University of Massachusetts Amherst, the largest public university in the state.
Hampshire County is home to a number of state parks, including the Quabbin Reservoir, the largest body of water in Massachusetts. The county is also home to the Mount Tom State Reservation, which is a popular destination for hiking and camping.
