Highland County, Virginia Public Records

Highland County is located in the western part of the Commonwealth of Virginia. It is part of the Shenandoah Valley region and is bordered by West Virginia to the west, Bath County to the north, Rockingham County to the east, and Augusta and Rockbridge Counties to the south. The county seat is Monterey.

Highland County was formed in 1847 from Bath and Pendleton Counties. It is named for its mountainous terrain. The county has a total area of 437 square miles, of which 434 square miles is land and 3 square miles is water.

The county is governed by a five-member Board of Supervisors, elected from five magisterial districts. The county is represented in the Virginia General Assembly by the 24th District in the Senate and the 20th District in the House of Delegates.

Highland County is served by the Highland County Public Schools system. The county is also home to the Highland Center for the Arts, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the arts in the county.
