Hinsdale County is located in southwestern Colorado, in the San Juan Mountains. It is the ninth-least populous county in Colorado. The county seat and only incorporated municipality is Lake City.
The county government of Hinsdale County is a board of commissioners, which is composed of three commissioners elected from single member districts. The county is part of the Sixth Judicial District, which includes the counties of Archuleta, Dolores, Hinsdale, La Plata, Mineral, Montezuma, Montrose, Ouray, San Juan, and San Miguel.
Hinsdale County is home to the West Elk Wilderness, a federally designated wilderness area. It is also home to the Weminuche Wilderness, the largest wilderness area in Colorado. The county is also home to several National Forest areas, including the Uncompahgre National Forest, the Rio Grande National Forest, and the San Juan National Forest.
