Island County is located in the U.S. state of Washington. The county seat and largest city is Coupeville. The county was created out of Thurston County on December 22, 1852 and is named for the numerous islands in Puget Sound.
Island County is governed by a three-member Board of County Commissioners. The commissioners are elected by district and serve four-year terms. The county is divided into three districts, each represented by one commissioner.
The county is served by the Island County Sheriff's Office, which is responsible for law enforcement, and the Island County Prosecutor's Office, which is responsible for prosecuting criminal cases. The county also has a Superior Court, which is responsible for civil and criminal cases.
